What services does Reading Works offer?
Free one-on-one or small group tutoring to adults in reading, writing, and speaking English. We also offer tutoring in math and computer skills.
I want to speak English better. Do you have conversation groups?
Yes. Conversation groups are facilitated by a trained volunteer.
I want to get a GED. Can you help me with that?
Can you help me learn how to use a computer?
Who is eligible for your services?
Adults (age 18 and over) who reside in Bernalillo County. We do not tutor children.
What is the cost?
Tutoring is free. You will pay a one-time, non-refundable $10 registration fee at your intake appointment.
I want to be a student at Reading Works. How do I start?
Phone us at 505-321-9620 to schedule an intake appointment.
When do you schedule intake appointments?
On Wednesdays at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm.
How long is the intake appointment?
Expect 2 1/2 hours for your intake appointment.
I do not speak English. Do I need to bring a translator to the intake appointment?
Once I am matched with a tutor, what is my time commitment?
You will agree to meet with your tutor for 40 hours during a six month period. That comes to 2 or 3 hours a week.
Where will I meet with my tutor?
You and your tutor will meet at a public place: our office, the library, Goodwill offices or community centers. Students and tutors do not meet in private homes.
When will I meet with my tutor?
You and your tutor will meet on days and times convenient for both of you.
Will I have to do homework?
Yes. To get the most out of your time at Reading Works, you will do homework.
When will I be matched with a tutor?
Matching depends on when a tutor is available and your schedule.
Do you provide child care when I am meeting with my tutor?
No. You will have to arrange for child care when you meet with your tutor.
