Our Board of Directors
I consider myself to be an Albuquerque native, have 2 children and 5 grandchildren. I have been a Board member and tutor in ESL and Basic Literacy since 2009, as well as Project Leader for a year. What keeps me tutoring is hearing the exclamation, “Oh, I never knew that!” said with a great smile. Those experiences underlie my work on the Board.
I am the founder of Reading Works. Many experiences brought me here. From 2001 to 2006, I tutored reading at TVI (now CNM). I was an ESL tutor in college. I grew up on a dairy farm and one of our hired hands could not read. When I was six, I asked my mother if I could teach him. She told me, "No. That would embarrass him." She was telling me to respect this man. I never forgot that. At Reading Works when I hear a student reading or an ESL class laughing and speaking English, my heart fills with joy.
Rosa is an avid reader and has been since childhood. Literacy is important to her because reading has brought her so much enjoyment. She grew up poor, but when she was reading she got to go on exciting adventures and meet important and interesting people between the front and back covers of the books she read.
Rosa grew up in New Mexico most of her life. She lived on a cattle ranch in SW NM and was homeschooled until the age of 12, as public school was too far to make it practical. Her parents moved closer to civilization at that time in order that she and her sister might attend public school.
She Graduated from Belen High School and attended UNM and CNM (TVI at that time) receiving an associate degree and a bachelors degree in nursing. She served in the US Army and Army Reserves, as a medic and nurse, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). She is currently studying for a Master in Legal Studies degree through University of Arizona’s online program.
Working in the medical field for over 20 years, she has in the last few years had the opportunity to act as a technical advisor for movies and television in the burgeoning NM film industry. She has appeared in several of the shows, though certainly does not consider herself an actor.
Rosa is a lifelong learner and travels as often as possible. Her travels have taken her to five of the seven continents and four of the five oceans. She recently fulfilled the childhood dream of visiting Australia and diving the Great Barrier Reef. She enjoys New Mexico skies, good food, a wide variety of music, reading (and listening to audiobooks), enjoying the outdoors as often as possible and trying to learn to play the guitar.
Rosa is grateful to her parents who instilled in her a love of reading and the outdoors.
Dr. Laura Banks
I have been part of the Reading Works family since 2012, serving as a basic literacy and computer skills tutor and assisting with writing grants and other fund‐raising activities. I’m a native of Albuquerque and an Eldorado Eagle, and attended New Mexico State University, Colorado State University, and the University of New Mexico. I work as an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Fun fact – I am one of 6 veterinarians working at UNM, participating in research and teaching.
